On Getting Unstuck

Stuck is that moment when you know you need to move forward, but you just don’t know how. It happens to all of us all the time. After years of studying these stuck moments as a firm, SYPartners has learned a few things about getting unstuck.

The biggest roadblock to getting unstuck is an unwillingness to admit that you’re stuck.

While that may seem pretty obvious, the fact is that most people think of “stuck” in a negative way—like it’s a sign of failure—but the faster you can admit you’re stuck, the faster you can start to get unstuck. The pattern you’ll start to see is that people striving for greatness actually get stuck all of the time. It’s a sign that they’re moving toward something and stretching outside of their comfort zone.

Getting unstuck is often all about reframing your situation.

When you’ve been staring at it for so long that you can’t see straight, you need to be prepared to call in reinforcements. So, having a handful of trusted mentors can be one of, if not THE, most useful assets. Once you’re able to reframe things, you can start thinking creatively about how to get unstuck. That’s when the ideas begin to flow.

Turn it into a daily habit.

We noticed over the years that one of the common characteristics of the most accomplished leaders, individuals, and groups is their ability to turn getting unstuck into a daily habit. They continually call on an arsenal of tools and methods that they use in different, creative ways to help them move forward.
